In the aged church where hundreds of a Quaker congregation once gathered, a new group has adopted the space and uses for a different form of spiritual guidance. Recovery Café Muncie [RCM] is a place that gives people in the Muncie community a chance to restart.
RCM was covered during April 3 to 8. There is no barrier to entering the cafe. Anyone who makes the step to attend a gathering is granted three guest visits. After that, RCM starts the process of membership. Guests are given membership status and sign up for a support group that they can attend.
Members and guests of RCM are treated to hot meals, games and member spotlights where they can hear the recovery journeys of their peers. RCM also embellishes their meetings with cultural enrichment efforts, such as a performance from a local Ukulele troupe or presentations about a volunteer’s recent trips around the world.
The goal of RCM is to provide a sense of community during hardship. It’s not just about finding ways to move forward; it’s about looking around and seeing who’s walking alongside you. (Photos by Ryan Fleek)
