Tending to the Orchard: East Central Neighborhood Association

The East Central Neighborhood Association has built an Orchard on the outskirts of the historic neighborhood. The lot used to house two rundown houses that were unused for years; eventually, the lot owner sold it to the city. Community members decided to tear down the old homes and start an Orchard rather than a garden. Since its creation, the Orchard has served as a community hub where people can come through and grab free produce during the summer. Members of the community who tend to the Orchard use fruits to create soup that is included in the Muncie Soup Crawl. In past years, they have had strawberry, raspberry, pear, and apple soups; this year, they hope to do a watermelon soup. Currently, the Orchard has pear trees, cherry trees, and apple trees; the apple and cherry trees will have four different types of fruit on them. The Neighborhood Association is excited to see how the Orchard will grow into a key part of the community, especially now that they have running water. (Photos by Aiden Murray)
